2023-2024 PXC WORK PARTY #1 - November 2-3 & OTHER NEWS.

2023-2024 PXC Work Party #1 is on! November 4-5. And there is some good solid work to do.

The most urgent work this weekend will be to retrieve the pallets that bridged the water courses on the Sprint Loop. Then the plastic half-pipes that covered narrow water flows across the Perisher XC trails and bridge covers will be collected and stored on the snow fences for the summer. The more workers the better for these jobs, come for one day or two.

For those who are not familiar with the Perisher Valley XC trails in the summer, it will be an education in the way that low-tech strategies are used to extend the snow cover on the trails when the water that is constantly flowing under the snow threatens to break up the trail surface.

An exciting addition to this work party will be the start of the 2024 Bridge Project - the construction of water mitigation bridges during the coming summer. A Bridge Project grant has been obtained to build approximately 60 bridge modules. The modules will permanently raise the track over identified water courses, removing the need to install the temporary drainage pipes in some areas before winter. Friedl Bartsch (see the Vale link) will be remembered with fondness and gratitude during this project. He created the original concept that developed into an ongoing resource for future water mitigation works on the XC trails.

Anyone who is available after the weekend is invited to join in any of an extra few days of set-up and preparation for the Bridge Project, an activity that will continue over the summer.

Meet at the Nordic Shelter at 9:00am for a 9:30 start. Gum boots will be a good footwear choice but be prepared for any weather. Bring work gloves and lunch/snacks/drinks.

If you plan to attend, please contact Peter Ward (nswxc1@gmail.com) so we can plan the work for the weekend. Likewise, let him know if you can attend any of the extra days after the weekend to take part in the Bridge Project.

Accommodation for the weekend is available courtesy of Canberra Alpine Club, Perisher (FOC for workers, thank you CAC). Contact Peter Cunningham (peter.petercunningham@gmail.com). Bring bed linen, towels and food/drink.

If this sounds like a weekend of hard yakka, it can be, sort of. But be assured that there is lots of chatting, horsing around and socialising during and after work at CAC for all workers.

Please pencil in the rest of the 2024 summer Perisher XC Work Parties (dates to be confirmed prior to each Work Party):

  • 3-4 Feb 24
  • 2-3 Mar 24
  • 6-7 April 24
  • 4-5 May 24
  • 1-2 Jun 24 (if required)

MORE NEWS:

VALE FRIEDL BARTSCH
It is with much sadness that we report the death of Friedl Bartsch on 7 October in Wollongong. Friedl had bravely battled cancer for the last two years and was a fighter right to the end.  https://www.perisherxcountry.org/news/vale-friedl-bartsch/

KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK - NOTICE OF AERIAL SHOOTING
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) would like to advise of a proposed aerial shooting program targeting deer and pigs in parts of Kosciuszko National Park. The area will be closed for a period of 4 days between Monday 13 November 7 am to Friday 1 December 7 pm 2023 (excluding weekends). https://www.perisherxcountry.org/news/kosciuszko-national-park-notification-proposed-aerial-shooting/

THE FUN BEGINS - 2023 CHARLOTTE PASS SPRING CAMP
There is not a groomed trail in sight, only the vast expanses of the Main Range. There is plenty of skiable snow to be had for the price of a hike over beautiful alpine terrain, starting from the Charlotte Pass turning circle. Fun and camaraderie are the order of the day as the 2023 CP Campers share their time on the snow and as residents of a ski lodge for most of the following week. https://www.perisherxcountry.org/news/fun-begins-2023-charlotte-pass-spring-camp/
