Monday Evening update.

This may well be the last email from the Nordic Shelter for this season.

Big shout out to everyone who participated in so many events, even though we had to reduce distances and expectations. It was still a lot of fun and on occasions, we had record numbers. Also a big thank you to those that donated to the running of the Shelter. This year will be a financial challenge given running costs of insurance etc that stay the same but the number of activities were reduced. Opportunities to give a tax deductible donation are linked to the Australian Sports Foundation at the bottom of this email.

Thanks must also go to NPWS for providing the trails and funds for the grooming, along with the dedication of the groomers from 4Site who often delivered great trails out of very difficult snow conditions. 

There are too many volunteers to name that make things happen in the background but a huge thank you to all of you. The XC ski community is incredibly fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers. 

We had the last hurrah on Friday 4th September with the National Interschools XC event being held at Blue Cow. Those that saw the intended course the day before were very pessimistic about an event taking place at all but the groomers from Vail resorts worked miracles bringing snow from some very steep areas, with the assistance of winching systems, onto the cross country course allowing more than 350 competitors mainly from NSW and Victoria to compete for their schools. It was an amazing feat to provide a such a course and it was very much appreciated by the students, interschool organisers and especially NSWACT XC committee who had the responsibility of setting the course and running the event.

The Fundraising event on Saturday evening for the XC National Ski Team was also a great success and will no doubt be on the calendar next year so put it in your social calendar for 2027 so you don't miss out.

Back country skiing is now the best option. Access via Thredbo chair is best value if you pre-purchase online. $58 for adults and about $35 for seniors and even better for children. Check on which lift will be operating as it is rumoured that the Kosi chair will close early for maintenance. The other access option is ride your bike from Perisher with a day pack onto which skis can be strapped easily. The road is cleared to the Charlotte Pass turnoff but not yet open to traffic due to limited parking opportunities.
